Lesson plan time – 30 min
This class is about how we express different emotions and what are the facial expressions we use. It also teaches the class that actors on television and in a theatre act out certain emotions.
Characteristics of effective learning –finding out and exploring, being involved and concentrating, playing with what they know
Our aim is to increase the children’s ability to recognize the impact environments have on our emotions, the way our actions impact others emotions.
We also want them to recognize the physical sensations of the different emotions.
Setting the scene and prep of room
Beanstalk – paper or form leaves stuck up on the wall in the shape of a beanstalk, cover this over with a blanket so the children can’t see it.

If your happy and you know it
Create and make
Ask the children what makes them sad and what faces they do when they are
sad. Now get the children to draw this expression on a paper plate and then
stick a lolly pop stick behind it to make a puppet. Ask the children what is
mummy like when you do something bad, hopefully they will say angry. Ask
the children ‘does mummy whisper like this or does she shout like this?’. Next
ask the children does she smile when she is angry or is she sad that she has had
to shout at you. Next ask the children what happens when mummy or daddy is
happy, how her/his face looks. Show them a happy face. Hopefully they will all
smile and then ask them to draw this expression on another plate. Ask the
children whilst they are drawing what makes them happy. Stick a lolly pop stick
behind to make the mask. Hide behind two plates and then move them away,
playing peekaboo with the children. Ask them to do the same with their masks.
